It's January 2014, the beginning of a new year. In spite of the fact that the Gazette has not yet been in existence for a full year, it still seems like a good time to do a little stock taking: to look back at what we have done so far, to look ahead to what he hope to do next and to critique our performance to date.
When we started publication in May of the last year, we declared our intention to \"publish weekly featuring various local events and diverse aspects of life in an almost completely undiscovered corner of this planet.\"
It soon became clear that there was no way I was going to be able to offer the quality of content I sought and still publish on a weekly schedule. Something had to give so we decided in September to switch to a bi-weekly schedule. Even so, we did manage to offer stories about rodeos, motorcycling, local history, tribal initiatives, and diverse bits of local color. So let's call this a mitigated success.
Looking to the future, in January, we will start the year by posting updated versions of our
rodeo map followed two weeks later by our
pow wow map.
A little later in the year, we plan to revisit some of our earlier issues to bring you new stories involving the Spray Rodeo, Canyon City's 62 Days, the Seneca Stampede and some other recurring events as well as lots of new stuff.
It is a little early to be certain yet but we hope to have some exciting news for bicycle enthusiasts. If all goes well, in a month or two, we will tell you about some new developments showcasing some of the greatest traffic-free bicycle touring anywhere.
As always, the future is inherently unknowable. We hope this means that we will have lots of other experiences and stories to offer as the year advances.
As for the introspection, I think we did pretty well considering. It's kind of hard to judge because I don't know of anyone who is trying to do quite the same thing. Most travel sites are produced by travelers who never stay in any one place for very long. Destination marketing organizations focus on a single region but the \"marketing\" in their name means their focus is business and some of the best things about eastern Oregon are not commercial. So I think I can safely say that the Grant County Gazette is the best website of its kind.
It is always possible to do better and we hope to do that in the coming year. I have focused on providing useful and original content because I think that is the most important element but this has meant that I have not been able to devote as much time as I'd like to this site's appearance. In the coming year I hope to do something about that.
As we hunker down and wait for spring, we look forward to being at least as informative and useful as we have been and much better looking. As always, we are eager to hear your evaluations good or otherwise so feel free to let us know what you think about us and what you would like us to do next. And our best wishes for a happy and prosperous new year to all.
