Following on to Know or Old Days at Hethering

Why They Called it the Gilded Age

Form overwhelms function. One of the most elaborate examples of gilt decorations and embossing ever to enter my store. The content is anonymously written moral exhortation circa 1872. I found several examples of contemporary print-on-demand versions of this book which suggests that it may have been popular at one time. So if you should want a reading copy one of those would probably be your best choice.

The value in this item is aesthetic; the gilt on the cover is remarkably ornate and still bright and that on the spine, though not as clean, is still clearly legible. The elaborate embossing is still more remarkable although it requires careful examination to appreciate it. An artifact of an age when too much was never enough. Page 7 has a tear in it but still intact and completely legible.

$20 takes it home or $20 + $4.13 if you buy online.
